In such cases I prefer to trust a correct use of words. If a news report does say 'forcible sodomy on the child', I will assume that it was forcible, and thus condemnable. If someone tells me they've done 40 push-ups, I'll believe them. I'm not going have disbelief for his/her claim just because such a claim won't always be true.
I cases of news reports on transgressive sexual activity, I know that the information reported could be incorrect, but I won't assume so. I want to avoid assuming 'no force involved' when a news report of actual case of force involved, reports 'force involved'. I find it distasteful to assume no harm, when there is actual harm done, and when harm is reported. If it turns out that it was untrue that there was force involved, I'll have reproach for the news report and its creator. Of course, if some part of the story tells of the sexual activity being fun and consensual, then I'll begin to question and be doubtful of the report's truthfulness. |
