This case highlights, to me, the difference between being an adult and being a kid/teenager, in what actions you take and how you react emotionally. In a way so that the situation of the kid/teen is enviable.

I can react with understanding of how the parents feel, and with understanding of being a young person. The former reaction has tones of the worry and the helplessness of the parents, while perhaps belittling her wanting to visit a boy whom she's met before. The latter reaction recognises the freedom and feeling of opportunity of youth against the worrying of caretakers; and perhaps the fascination with life in a way that has faded for adults (this depends on why she did this).

She seems to have some trouble at home, though, since she decided to steal 10 grand and run away.

Regarding the push "to change the law to force cab drivers to ask for identification if they are transporting a minor across state lines", mentioned in the article, I'll add, besides the obvious youth lib. sentiments, that if such a law were made, children traveling with adults should not be exempt. One could easily think of Humbert Humbert, so that the thought of a child traveling alone would be less cause for concern in comparison.
