Somewhat related: Louis C.K. says that if parents were honest, they would admit that they both love and hate their children at the same time. This was shocking to me when I first heard it, and I thought he was exaggerating for the sake of comedy. But after I gave it some thought, I understood it. Parental love is a vastly different kind of love than romantic love is. With romantic love people tend to overlook the flaws of the loved one--that's one reason why I'm not convinced that an adult-child relationship could ever be on par with other romantic relationships. But that aside, I can never remember feeling hatred for a child I loved. Irritation, sure, but hate? Anyway, I think that explains a lot about why things are the way they are, why the need to control kids is such a powerful social force, and adds another dimension to why we are so hated.
