Ethan posted this in the VirPed Forums, and it has given me cause to reassess my understanding of the concept of rape culture and the degree to which it exists in the US. Although I am not fully convinced that rape culture doesn't exist here to some degree, I agree with McElroy that the focus on the concept tends to remove responsibility from the individuals who actually rape. However, I do not think that holding those people fully responsible for their actions and addressing aspects of the culture which might contribute to a higher percentage of rape are mutually exclusive. All in all, a solid lecture.
