And then I would have confronted them, albeit in a polite manner. If you have been a regular there for many years, and you are well known there, then they have no business projecting their fears onto her.
They had no right, on their own, to do so. If the girl had been pre-conditioned by her parents to be that way, she probably wouldn't have spoken with you anyway. Her parents obviously had not frightened her in relation to every adult who wasn't her parent bieng a potential danger. So in this regard, they are assumeing the role of her parents (something they have no place doing), and instilling fear in her in the process.
Again, I would have found out who did it, and discussed it with them. Who knows, you may have brought about some enlightenment. And, hopefully, maybe she will be ready to talk with you later on.
