Something I have been pondering....

Hi all,

I find the news about these LGs being abducted, sexually assualted, and even murdered very disturbing, as I am sure you all do as well. I have been wondering about what the impact of reporting these horrible events may have upon pre aolescent LGs who become aware of these horrible tragic occurences in the lifes of other LGs not much different than themselves.

I have read in Men In Wonderland by Catherine Robson where Lewis Carroll (Charles Dodgson) raises an objection to the news paper coverage of the Jack Stead exposes` about young girls being abducted and imprisoned in brothels to satisfy the lusts of certain types of men back in Victorian times.

In the appendix to the book in a letter to the St. James Gazette he states:

"The question at issue is not whether great evils exist--nor again whether the rousing of public opinion is a remedy for those evils--on these two points we are agreed. The real question is, whether this mode of rousing public opinion is, or is not, doing more harm than good".

So anyway I was just wondering about what you all may feel about the
impact such all "pervasive media coverage" of such horrible events, may have upon the psyches of LGs. I mean should we disregard such considerations because of a "idealised concept" of "freedom of the press". Is this "idealism" of free speech and freedom of the press of greater worth than a little girl growing up relatively confident in the inherent goodness of life? (or perhaps you may say "life isn't good"?)

Sense Of Life:

In a similar spirit which prompted the question of Charles Dodgson, I am asking whether or not all this news coverage in such a public manner about these terrible crimes actually helps or hinders the safety and well being of LGs?
