That really hurts, I know! I tried something similar years ago. Thought she liked me (gave me hugs and all that). Like you, I tried to surprize her - and whak - slap in the face (feeling, not literally).

I believe we have to expect this from "children" (humans in general, actually), from time to time. And you are talking about a teen girl! I know from experience that LG's cna throw temper tantrums at you. Some times it's just that...

I know when I was a kid (teen), I loved my parents, but sometimes they made their appearences at the most inconvenient times. Maybe she had those feelings at the time? After all, she was 14. We must unfortunately accept the fact, that in the most cases, we are only (intimate?) friends with teens, when we are alone. Usually not in front of their peers...

BTW, 30 miles bike ride? Are you training for Le Mans? :-) Hope your country is as flat as mine (know where you are from, but not sure of your landscape). Our highest point is ~170m above sea level. :)
