I hope it was that these people were blocking you, rather than you were afraid of their reaction. I think it is important for us, or any adult, to be polite and respectful toward kids.

I work for a school system. I'm not a teacher, and I don't normally have any contact with students. Occasionally, I do visit schools. I consider a treat to be there as students are arriving or leaving, and I can open the door for a group of them. Most really appreciate it and thank me. To help an lg with her jacket would be very nice, and possibly an icebreaker for conversation.
