It's very difficult to say anything *the right thing* here, but I deeply feel that it would be no good at all to just let it rest and walk away. (I agree that it would prove the parents right if you just keep away) Especially when you're a friend of her father! I definitely think you should talk to her parents. Play the "strong friendship card" and DO NOT MOVE YOURSELF INTO A DEFENSIVE POSITION! You have to get that into your mind (I know it's not easy) that you didn't do nor say anything to feel the least guilty about and that you do not feel guilty about WHO YOU ARE. Show them pure amazement over the things they obviously come to think or suspect about you. If they don't go that way in discussion and try to avoid the real point, nail them to it. Say into their face (if it HAS to be) what you think they are fearing, speak IT out and tell them that they're wrong if they think that.

If all this fails, I would try to get that letter to her directly. (but I would change some of the style of the letter, make it more simple and clear. A farewell, not a pamphlet.)

Whatever you do: Good luck, my friend!
