I'll just start somewhere:
Most of my family on my mothers side is made up out of very artistic and/or hyper-intelligent people. So...I'm actually quite confident my mother will take it well. (in the end at least)

Ofcourse you can't prove this, but to me it does. By looking back at the flow" discussions of other difficult subjects I had with them in the past, they tend to listen more instead of blindly throwing their own believes at you...

I don't know this "doctor laura" since they don't air it here in my country...but I visited the website, and it looks like some sort of Dr. Phil :| (which they do show here)

I've never knew him, because he left my mother when I was about 3 years old. Not with big fights or anything bad...they just broke up :)
