Passwords

Never use a word as a password. It's common practice for hackers (state-chartered or otherwise) to use "brute force" password-breaking programs that consist of huge dictionaries, from which every word and variant is attempted, in the hopes that they will get lucky. Words are easy to remember, but make the worst passwords. They often use dictionaries of other languages too, so foreign words are just as unwise.

The best idea is to use a password that is completely random. A combination of letters and numbers, capitals and lowercase, and as long as you can possibly remember. Sure, it's hard to remember, but I remember reading somewhere that if you have such a password that is longer than 5 or 6 characters, it would take the world's fastest supercompter millions of years to break it.

There are sites on the internet which will generate these random strings for you. You just tell them how many characters you want. Do a search for "random string generator."
