I have been thinking about your post since I replied... along the lines of the most loving gifts I've shared with a loved one. So I rather take back my earlier post :-)

Probably the most magical occurred many decades ago. 11 year old Susie and I had been reading a book together entitled "Voyage to Arcturas" One night we went on a walk in the forest near her home and found Arcturas, a very bright star in Bootes and gave the star to each other... so that no matter where we were in the world in the future we had a magical string connecting us through this star. She later died in a plane crash but wherever she is (and I remember her as being 11-12 always) every time I look at the stars and see Arcturas I can remember a magical two years we spent, I feel her presence.

Sharing pretty stones or flowers or pine cones found on walks together with a loved one is a beautiful gift... there is a way of making all these things, which have no intrinsic value, magical and memorable. It is special with children because they still believe in magic and think magically.

Note: I have found one of the more useful bits of arcane knowledge for sharing with children is knowing the constellations and the stars (star gazing)and some of the legends and stories that go with them. Makes the nights magical. In the daytime it's nice to know about the local flowers, animal tracks, birds and bird calls. Knowledge of these things is a magical sharing experience. How about a nice star book for your girl friend?
