Girl's new word

I was at the kitchen table eating breakfast when my sweetheart [5F] sat in the chair across from me. She grabbed the sports page from a newspaper and pretended to read it. She pushed her chair away from the table and crossed her legs, stuck her nose in the air, and took that annoying "I'm too sexy for you pose" that her mother always does. I didn't know whether to be horrified at how she was copying her mother, or simply enjoy how good she looks while she was doing it.

I asked "so how are the [local sports team] doing?"

She replied "Yup ... uh humm ..." as if she was too deep into a story to reply.

She got bored putting on the show, came over and climbed up on my lap, put the sports page on the table in front of us, and asked "what does this say?" I read the headline, and one word made her laugh. "Rookie?" "Rookie??" she kept repeating.

Perhaps it was just because "rookie" sounds like "cookie". I'll never know why she took a liking to that word. So I explained that a rookie was a player who was just starting out, and isn't as experienced as the other players. I didn't hear the word again for several days.

A few days later, the two of us were in a car. All of a sudden, she yelled "rookie!". "Where? I don't see any rookies." She got frustrated, turned around and pointed out the back window, and yelled "right there!". She was pointing at a street sign that was nearly falling off of the post it was on. "I think you're right! That sign was put there by a couple of ROOKIES!" She giggled hysterically.

For the rest of the ride, we looked for anything that isn't exactly the way it should be. A rookie painted that house! ... put the bumper on that car! ... is flying that airplane! ... is driving that car! ... etc.

The world is filled with rookies! The next time you travel, take a look around, and you'll see the work of rookies all around you!
