I half-disagree... I know many kids that age, most of them maybe, are like that, but that happens in part due to the dreadful state of education these days (and here I blame both schools and parents) and also because they are not used to be engaged in conversation so easily change their focus away. But when you know a child and engage them in conversation and they become accustomed to be listened to and to the general back-and-forth dynamic of a conversation, they adapt to it and talk like people. Now, that should be the norm at 4 years old IMO - it was at 3 to me!! Parents and schools are to blame if today it is so only at 7... And by the way, I have never had the joy of "teaching" conversation to a girl, but I have done it several times with boys, and that is how it happens.

Mmmmh, that thing that happened with your wife technically qualifies as a GM... as a fellow GLer it must be taken as a compliment that someone thinks your wife is SOOOO underage... mmmmh, mewishes...
