Actually I'm not sure - I seem to remember them saying he was a 2nd or 3rd year student but this was a few years ago so I'm not sure. Actually, my first roommate in college had a girlfriend in HS (senior), and to my knowledge no one said anything to him about it. I guess people would object more to age differences when the girl is in HS and the male in college, or middle school and high school, etc. just because psychologically it seems like a bigger "leap". Still though, I have no idea how even "normal" people could object to an age difference of a few years in any situation.
