What a great post! I just want to comment on so many parts of it. . . .

said that her husband was a police officer and that there were sick people out there.

Well, that wasn't a very nice thing for your teacher to say about her husband, even though it's probably true - police officers do have a well deserved reputation for being pretty sick individuals. This seems to be especially true in a certain state you have referenced before, if the rumors I've heard are correct and the officers I've met from there are representative.

(Boy, do I feel like an ass.)

I know that feeling so well, Moetan. I was brought up to believe some pretty amazingly stupid things, and when I finally came to my senses and realized that I couldn't trust the people who had taught me those things - not because they were dishonest but because they had a huge blind spot - boy did I feel like an ass. Especially when I remembered "defending my faith" and telling people that such-and-such was a sin, even though I tried to make them understand I didn't hate them, but the sin. I take some comfort that I never got into the "bashing people for the sake of bashing people" games, but it is quite embarrassing to remember what a fool I made of myself, and how much hurt I must have caused some good people. I was a good deal older than you are when I came to my senses, so you at least can rightfully claim the folly of youth - the chief folly of which, for an intelligent person, is paying too much attention to one's elders.

Otherwise - wow! it's inspiring to know that you are out there, striking a few small blows for justice. In the end, it's the small things that count - it's the few pebbles that start an avalanche, it's the butterfly effect.

And if you want to have some fun, you can always point out that the usual American pronunciation "pehdo" is the stem for "foot", and "peedo" is the stem for "child".
