A GL-orious Two Days
Posted by Mesmerised on 2006-November-28 13:00:28 EST, TuesdayI mentioned in a previous post that I now work as a substitute / cover teacher. Most of the work Ive got recently has been with older kids - ten, eleven, twelve, thirteen year olds. But a few days back, I was called in to take a class of five year olds for a couple of days, and one of the lgs in that class just about blew my mind I almost feared that I was going to come out of the classroom with little GL logo hearts spinning around my head - or that the impact of the experience may become too obviously visible in some other, more directly anatomical regard ;)
There they all were, just a regular bunch of little kids, curious to know what this cover teacher was going to be like - and among them, a little girl, blonde hair in plaits, sparkling blue eyes and the cutest little retroussé nose imaginable. The nose alone would have been enough to induce a kind of madness in me; the angelic spirit to which it was attached just about sent me over the top. To say that I fell in love with her in the blink of an eye would frankly be a gross understatement. The fact that I survived an entire two days with her without undergoing cardiac seizure is the best evidence for the miraculous that I know of.
OK, enough - on with the glorious details. One of the first things which struck me was the cute little twists of interpretation which she began putting on my requests to the class Examples? Come and sit down here in front of me for her became Come and sit down here on his feet ; Let me see your picture for her became Try to clamber up on his knees and make nose contact; Would you like me to help you write a title for the picture? (kneeling beside her) somehow or other became Use the fluffy ends of my plaits to tickle his nose. All the sonnets of Shakespeare were reduced to the turgid scribblings of a talentless hack by that little endeavour, I can tell you.
The parent helper I had in the classroom seemed highly amused, telling me this little one was quite a character. I was thankful she could not read my thoughts as I chuckled in reply.
Break time was nice. I had a constant (fixed would perhaps be a better word) companion. Once I needed to give a couple of the older lads a bit of a ticking off outside - a need that she anticipated, and decided to step in first. Priceless - shes not one to spare the rod, evidently.
The second day passed in similar fashion, with one notable difference. Usually, I arrive well before any of the kids, to get things set up for the day. Im not sure of the exact methods which she employed with her father in order to get him to deliver her to the school half an hour earlier than usual, but they sure were effective and I wouldnt mind betting they involved expert use of both nose and plaits. She came in armed with a pile of drawings for me, and a book that we needed to look at together with great urgency. With her cute little fingers dancing across my knee, we looked through the book; it may come as no surprise that I have no recollection whatsoever of the books contents. For all I know, it could have been War and Peace or Jemima Puddleduck. My concentration was all of a dither
Unfortunately, those two days passed all too quickly. Hopefully Ill get to return there at some point; I already called in once afterwards, but there is a limit to the number of diaries, pens etc. that an infatuated little paedo can misplace in a classroom with the obvious need to return the following day to pick up Ill just have to work on persuading her regular teacher of the wisdom of packing her job in - now theres a thought!;-)
