From about 9 on up kids have a finely attuned sense of justice. I don't think they start getting defensive as if an apology would be admitting weakness until 13 or so.

Unfortunately our society hobbles self-esteem so much that many adults never recover the ability to sincerely apologize.

They sound like nice girls.
