Ah yes - the art of gazing without staring ;-) I know exactly what you mean by "achingly lovely". It's a special kind of feeling isn't it, when you realise that there's a precious treasure it seems only you can see. And I've also reached the conclusion that we, not the brainwashed majority, are the ones who are "sane" :-)
