One thing that confused me though is that if this was outside a store, why not take the girl into the store and ask the clerk behind the register if they have a phone to call the police rather than take them directly there?

The bench where I met the girl was on the way to the store, not outside it. The police station I took her too was within easy walking distance. I wasn't in a car, I was on foot.
