It's hard to communicate something if you have no concept of it.

Pain, pleasure, hunger, thirst, discomfort, and basic sensory input like light, dark, color, near, far, fuzzy, clear, loud, quiet, smelly, taste, feel, etc, these are about the limits of a very young infant's conceptual abilities.
