Many people who are politically right-of-center in the USA are offended by the use of Spanish in stores, in telephone menu systems, etc. Such people take offense at being asked to "press 1 to continue in English". These people often hold the opinion that English should be made the official language of the USA, and that the government should not provide Spanish language versions of official documents and forms, despite the large number of people in the USA who only speak Spanish. Chain e-mails and blog posts decrying the need to "press 1 to continue in English" abound in the USA. I have received such chain e-mails from family members in the past.

Many people who are politically left-of-center in the USA find the above view racist, seeing it as a thinly veiled attack on immigrants and Hispanic people.

Just as a side note, several prominent Internet "Antis" also have a history of making inflammatory posts about illegal immigrants.
