I came to it late. The whole notion that it was an adaptation of a video game had me steering clear for quite a while. Love games, love movies, hate movies based on games.
But one of my favorite genre-bending films is Christophe Gans' martial arts/costume drama/monster movie; "Brotherhood of the Wolf." One day I was looking up Gans and saw that he directed "Silent Hill." Then I looked at the cast and saw all these great indy film vets. You just DON'T cast a video game adaptation with Sundance Film Festival type actors :)
So what can I say? It defies expectations and works quite well.
