GM with Ashley

I've been thinking of GMs to share and I thought this was a cute one. It was roughly 2 years ago.

I had known Ashley for only a month, since I had become friends with her dad and visited every so often. She was five. She was not afraid of strangers and wanted to get to know me. Her aunt once said, “Oh that girl likes grown ups, especially men. She’s gonna be a heart breaker, that one!” For me it was close to the truth.

But anyway, one day I was at her house and while her siblings were playing, I was being a Good Samaritan teaching Ashley how to read from a color book. She sat on my lap as I read the sentences, and pointed to words. “Okay Ashley, ‘There were seven…’”
“Ducks!”
“Very Good! ‘The ducks were…’”
“Wet…and…happy.”
“Good job!” We turned to a page were there were lots of women pictures.
She then said, “I think she’s pretty; and that one too!” Then she asked me, “Who do you think [in the book] is the prettiest girl in the world?”
I smiled and said, “You know who I think is the most beautiful girl in the whole world?” I then tapped her button nose with my finger, and said,

“You.”

“Me???” There was a pause, she looked at the book, then she said, “I think this one is pretty.”
“Oh yeah, me too.”

I didn’t think much of it until the next day, when I was sitting outside with Ashley and her older brother Chris. Chris, the sly devil, came up to me, put his arm around me, with a big smile on his face. “Davis,” he said “I don’t want to, like, embarrass you or something, but Ashley—“

“No Chris,” said Ashley. “Please, it’s a secret!”
“Ashley told us that you said she was beautiful, and she really liked it.”

“Oh,” I said, “I hope you’re not embarrassed Ashley.”
“It’s okay,” she said girlishly. “I don’t mind.”
“Are you two, like, falling in love or something?” asked Chris.
“Maybe,” I said. “And if we are, we might have to get married someday.”

She definitely liked hearing that. You could almost see her heart melt. Who knows; that prediction might one day come true. =P
