a recent visit and a GM

I recently visited someone I hadn't seen in a long time. She has daughters of her own now.

The family might be described as educated mainstream American, with a dash of Hippie culture. Had some interesting discussions. It was nice to talk to a Christian who had tried attending a local protestant church only to be appalled at the filth being spewed from the pulpit.

She doesn't know my orientation or interest, but she happened to mention the fact that our society has become paranoid about protecting children, to the point that she felt that children are being deprived of their childhood - deprived of the opportunities to explore on their own and learn about the world. At the same time, she feels she has no choice but to participate in this theft, as refusing to participate in this abuse would put her children at risk from the state. It makes me wonder how many other parents feel the same way.

Shortly after arriving, she sent me out with her 8yo daughter to perform a chore. 8yo daughter was my tour guide along the way, and when I paused to look at something for too long, she slipped her hand into mine to lead me away. She outweighed me 1 to 3, so naturally I had no choice but to follow.

The daughters were fine company - well behaved, but also willing to assert themselves. 8yo daughter managed to find lots of opportunities to hug me. About to say good night - requires a hug. Delayed for a minute - requires another hug. OK, finally time to go to bed - requires another hug. Made me think she likes me. ;-)

I had a delightful visit, and I think she liked it as well.
