i've had similar experiences F.P.J. Mask, both in losing very good friends for no other reason than i have been honest about my orientation, and also in feeling lonely and desperate, and also flip-flopping between feeling happy with my sexuality and feeling hopelessly trapped by it.

i still feel all this very deeply at times, but ideas i got from buddhism have made things easier for me.

in particular, love for others is impossible without love for yrself. learning to love yourself and forgive yourself creates the inner circle of a set of radiating circles of love that eventually will allow you to forgive those who've harmed you and understand those you disagree with.

compassion and fearlessness are what you need to walk the path of a bodhisattva, but if you can walk that path, you'll be happy. that's guaranteed. you should get hold of Pema Chodron's book 'Comfortable with Uncertainty'.
