FYI: Mardi Gras

Mardi Gras, from the French "Fat Tuesday", is the final day of traditional festivities (known as "Carnival" in some countries) before Ash Wednesday and the beginning of Lent.

In most places, Mardi Gras is quite heterosexual (involving lots of flirting), but in Australasia it seems to have become a Gay Pride festival, and it is not necessarily held on the Tuesday before Lent.

Rather confusing, I think.
