Since you mentioned the one side of the coin, a look at it from the disadvantaged and minority side, I wanted to mention the other side of the same coin - the privileged majority side.

Earlier in the year I joined a Livejournal community, debunkingwhite, and since that time learned a lot more about racism from the other side - from the white privilege side. As a result of that exposure, currently, I am reading "Why Are All the Black Kids Sitting Together in the Cafeteria?" (by Beverly Daniel Tatum), and while I am white, and therefore in the past was unable to recognize my white privilege, last night I thought about how those of other sexualities also take their "privilege" for granted.

It was an interesting parallel.

It was also interesting reading about how people go through their racial identity processes, and how parallel these are to the sexual identity processes that I have experienced with regard to this whole girl-loving deal.
