A Pleasant Ride (GM)

Today I finished an unremarkable and tiring day of work, fully expecting an equally unremarkable termination to my day. I took my time walking the four blocks to my bus stop, contemplating various activities that might spice up the evening. Of all the things that ran through my mind, none were as enchanting as what actually happened.

As the bus pulled up to my stop, I noticed an unusually large number of heads silhouetted in the tinted windows. In addition to being plentiful, these heads seemed to belong to bodies that sat a little closer to the ground than the run-of-the-mill adults that frequent my route home. With my interest piqued, I stepped onto the bus and handed the driver my pass. As I turned, my suspicions were confirmed. The bus was teeming with children, all aged 8-10 and approximately 60% female. I quickly noted that they all had matching T-shirts which marked them as members of a summer day camp. I looked around and realized all the seats were filled and that I would have to stand (a small price to pay). I took my place between a blonde girl, about 8, and a sandy-haired girl, approximately 10. The sandy-haired girl noticed my surprise and explained that today their camp went on a field trip to explore the downtown district where I work. She was highly freckled and had a pair of beautiful brown eyes. I usually don’t have a preference between freckled and non-freckled girls, but they fit well with her face, and in this case, I found them delightful. I asked her what they normally do at camp, and she described many traditional summer games and sports. She talked with me for the entire twenty-minute ride home, and then expressed her displeasure when I told her we were approaching my stop. I was half-tempted to stick around and catch my stop on the way back, but I decided that would be suspicious and irresponsibly capricious. I said goodbye and thanked her for talking to me. She said that she hoped we ran into each other again sometime, which was heartwarming, even though I find it unlikely.

I spent the walk home, and some minutes after my arrival, returning to reality. There is always sadness after a GM has ended, but it is a bittersweet sadness, and I wouldn’t give up my GMs for anything. I can only hope I actually do run into her again.

The rest of my day seemed better thanks to this encounter. Thank heavens for remarkable LGs who can bring light to an unremarkable day.
