I thought to myself then, and still do to this day, that the groom is a hypocritical ass.

Either that, or protecting his non-virgin bride from ugly rumors.

(Not that the subject of such rumors would be ugly, of course, but rumors themselves are often ugly, even if what they describe is utterly innocent.)
