I called my parents Mom and Dad, and was taught to always address adults by their last names, e.g. Mr. Smith, Mrs. Wesson, Miss Colt.

However, I later discovered that my father had always called his parents by their given names, and I've seen many other families where this is the case.

Along similar lines, one woman I know was raised by her mother - a Southerner - to always say "yes sir / no sir / yes ma'am / no ma'am" as a sign of respect. Then, when she was a child, the family moved to a city in the Northeast, where she got in trouble at school for saying "Yes ma'am" to a teacher who was convinced that a "ma'am" was the proprietor of a brothel.

So, it seems to depend on one's social circle and one's geographical position.
