I'm not familiar with the circumstances, but this may simply be an issue of public safety.

Keep in mind that in some rural areas of the south, modernity has never caught on. If the black students are happily talking about Obama's victory, and a sizable portion of the white students are so unhappy about it that they are just looking for a reason to start a fight, then school officials may not have much other choice.

I mean, what else are they going to do? Call the police and have a quarter of the town arrested? Call out the National Guard and have their town made an international laughingstock?

Or just make it a blanket rule that no one discuss it, period.

Certainly, this action is a terrible one in many ways, and probably illegal as well. But I can understand why school administrators may have felt it was their only option.
