One who did not was Alice Hastings Bradley. Her parents were Chicago socialites and African explorers. In 1921 young Alice was taken on a safari to the Congo immortalized in the book Alice in Jungleland; written by her mother Mary and illustrated by Alice.

But the human cruelty, death and suffering she encountered there combined with public denial of all of these continued to haunt her all her life.
