The Dutch treat

In contradiction to what many people think, this custom has little to do with selfishness. The Dutch simply have a strong urge to be independent from others.

When going out in a group (e.g. dinner with co-workers) the bill is usually equally split, regardless of what you ate or drank.

When dating a lady you can offer to pay the bill, but usually the lady will suggest to split it or she will tell you she will be the one to pay next time. The first option is sometimes also used as a polite way to tell you she is not interested in you.
The second option is common amongst friends or is sometimes used as a sign she is interested in you.

Ignoring this is a big insult for a Dutch lady: you are basically telling her she is not capable of paying for her own food.

Even LG's will do this, when i bring a friend of A. to an amusement park or zoo i will pay for ticket and lunch, but you can be pretty sure she will offer to give you an ice-cream or coke.
Nevertheless she will ask you politely if it's OK to do so. My nieces did this and so did Laura and Lisa.

Agreed: a bit OT but it might be useful information in case you meet a Dutch girl :-)
