It really should not be a big deal in a more rational world but unfortunately such types of relationships are strongly condemned (and adults who wish to engage in them) in Canada even if they are technically legal. Also, believe it or not, there are many Canadians who stupidly think that the Age of Consent in Canada is 18 due to the influence of American TV (no offence).

I might feel more comfortable interacting with a teen girl in a different context but a 30 year old (at the time) guy talking to a 16 year old girl (to whom I would be a complete stranger) and then add my social impairments to the mix...yes if she detected that I was attracted to her she might freak out (I've seen many 19 and 20 year olds freak out at smaller age gaps than that) and that is why I felt so anxious.
