Robert Heinlein

It sounds outrageous when stated so succinctly, but this idea was first brought to my attention through the writings of Robert Heinlein, the dean of science fiction

Heinlein is overrated. He's a decent storyteller, but his politics often get in the way of his writing. He has proved frustrating to scholars on either side of the political spectrum. That's not necessarily a bad thing, but one might describe Heinlein as a 'stubborn individualist,' and much of the time he seems to embrace controversy simply for its own sake. He is the only writer to date that's caused me to lob one of his books across the room, and I've read stuff all over the socio-political spectrum.
