But surely value and respect are different things. Gold is valuable, slaves are valuable. To be valued but not respected is the worst possible combination. If you are neither valued nor respected, people will mostly ignore you. If you are respected but not valued, people will at least show you courtesy. If you're valued and respected, people will obey you. If you are valued but not respected, people will try to control you.
