Me neither can understand how this could ruin her and her family's life/lives...

When did he become a (very) public person? Before or after the incident?
When did he pay the money? Right after the incident, or later?
Maybe he paid it only ten or five years ago? When he was a known politician?

Maybe she have wasted all the money, and now she wants more, by selling the "story" to the media?

(Maybe the money 'devastated' her...)

Or maybe she is frustrated because she is getting old and fat. (Like the rest of us, I must add...) Even still, if it happened to me, I would never 'bathe and tell', like she did.
