I had a big crush on a classmate in 2nd grade as well. We flirted some and this fine young lady, she did come to my birthday party. I continued to like her on and off after that. Although at times she started to reciprocate that interest, it never really went anywhere.
There was another girl I liked in that time period as well... one day she chose to sit next to me during reading time despite another dude asking her to join him. I was thrilled! The weird thing was that for some reason the teacher wanted us all to sit along one wall, which wasn't very big, and resulted in everyone being squished pretty close together. Thus I was in physical contact with my crush for the better part of 15-20 minutes as we shared a story together.
Another funny thing about me and girls in elementary school: I kept "points" in my head of who had the best interactions with and best favor of the cute girls (mainly the two mentioned above). One fellow actually stole a kiss off one on the playground in 2nd grade. He had 300 points for this, and I was deeply envious about it :-pppp
My first crush on a girl that was substantially younger than me happened around the end of junior high. It was a girl I saw while walking home from school frequently, but I was always too shy to introduce myself to her, until one day I finally worked up the courage to do so. At this point I already knew her name and a few miscellaneous facts about her (but obviously had to pretend I didn't to avoid sounding like a stalker!). Our first meeting went brilliantly well. I fell in love with the sound of her voice. I was on cloud nine for the rest of the week. As we continued to talk, her absolutely-fantastic-amazing-magnificent aura began to fade, and she turned out to be a pretty ordinary girl. Nice, and pretty, but inevitably not up to the ridiculously high image that my imagination had cast for her.
What I find really intriguing is that the way I feel towards cute girls now is, as near as I can discern it, EXACTLY the same way I felt about them when I was just a grade-schooler myself. If it was considered socially acceptable and not pathological for me to like little girls when I was little too, what would possibly cause my brain to change so that I *stopped* liking them? This has always been a puzzle to me. I happen to like pretty much all the same things I learned to like as a kid. Same food, same toys, same entertainment, same recreational activities. Same taste in girls. Aren't most people at least somewhat like this? Of course, tastes may "evolve" somewhat. But are ordinary heterosexuals as children *not* attracted to other children? Are they attracted to adults even while they are children?
I really don't think there is a biological mechanism that would change the age/appearance of person to which one is physically attracted. It must be something culturally learned. Ok, I got off topic here. Sue me :-p
