Thanks for sharing, I think it is always insightful to hear about these times where people get mad at you, or me, or one of 'us'. We really don't know what that lady was yelling at you for, she could have been telling you off for many reasons. I think we are left to have to guess though, because if she were in fact worried that you were a 'child-predator' she probably wouldn't say so directly.

You have to figure that if she thought you were going to kidnap someone for ransom, one would wonder why not any of the girls? It wouldn't have to be Paola. Any one of them could have been held. She probably was wondering why the interest in the girl. Now the little girl who said she was crazy was probably onto something... ;)

Maybe you were just being sarcastic it seems, but that may be too much caution. It takes a while to get to know people though, you are right, before you can start talking about them to others without them around, without people becoming suspicious sometimes.
