Yes, I would have definitely asked them. My guess is that it was some type of scavenger hunt type of game. When I was a teen we played those games a lot where you had to go around finding different things, or doing different activities. And you got extra points if you had a certain handicap. One of the handicaps was everyone being blind, except for the leader, as you mentioned. Another was that nobody could talk. A third was to have each person's feet bound so you couldn't walk, only hop around.

Usually these are church groups doing this, and the fact that they were dressed more conservatively may lend support to this.
