Really I think Beckii should just accept that she's attractive, and that that's what a lot of men like about her, and that it doesn't mean she has to do anything creepy with them. In other words, embrace it, rather than acknowledge it begrudgingly. But maybe for a 14-year-old girl on this side of the world, that may be asking a bit much.

Full agreement with the above. I took note of the part of the documentary where Beckii said that she understands the cultural differences, but she still believes it's wrong for older men to admire the physical attractiveness of girls her age, or for a young teen girl to exude sex appeal. She is entitled to her opinion, but has she ever considered that her beliefs are based on a Vicorian mindset, and that interacting on a daily basis with another culture with different views of youthful beauty may serve to enlighten her about the topic and not see it in black and white terms any longer? She also mentioned that she wants to downplay the sexual undertones of the anime dance she emulates in her future work, but as I said in my earlier essay in this thread, she needs to understand that anime has never been totally "innocent" or bereft of sexual undertones, and that she believes otherwise mostly due to the sanitized and edited versions she viewed in the British imports. Rather than trying to create or appeal to a version of the anime that is acceptable to her cultural beliefs, perhaps she should make an effort at understanding the idea that young adolescent girls are attractive to guys outside of their own age group, and that the girls appearing in anime were never intended to be entirely bereft of their sexual attractiveness, even though that is far from the only thing fans of anime admire about them.

As for her mother saying that she doesn't want to assume that every adult man who watches her daughter are dangerous creeps and that some of them do view her "innocently"--that is indeed a commendable attempt at someone raised in an ignorant culture in the midst of the sex abuse hysteria to be open-minded, but has she ever considered that it's entirely possible for an adult male admirer to appreciate her daughter's physical attractiveness (in addition to her talent, energy, creativity, and glowing personality) without being a dangerous creep or a "seedy" individual? I really hope that the time that Beckii and her family spends in Japan ultimately ends up enlightening them and to accept the fact that young adolescent girls are attractive to people from all age groups, and are far from being devoid of sexual attractiveness in general. Does she believe that girls magickally gain all of their sex appeal the moment they reach their 18th birthday?
