I think it's a good idea to teach the birds and bees at an early age, say 4 or 5. Teaching 10 year old youths is FAR too late especially given that most of them are hitting puberty at that age or younger. It's only completely normal for any 9 or 10 yo to expect puberty to hit any time, hence the curiosity or anxiety that some of them may feel over the matter. And if they are not told in advance what to expect they may get really traumatized when they have a period, and get paranoid of all sorts of things such as cancer or something. So it's a really good idea for mother to explain these things well in advance.
