All we have are the accounts of historians, who are often incredibly biased and/or ignorant of the real events themselves.

Except that civil records of marriages exist in Europe for as much as a thousand years. Obviously there are no records that old in the Americas, I hope not having to explain why. And obviously not everywhere in Europe either: Dresden, for example, is a bad place to do that research.

I just don't believe it was the rule rather than the exception.

Then drop the belief. Records exist.
