I don't see it too often, but it's quite an interesting thing to ponder when you see someone watching a kid a certain way. Usually the giveaway is just that -- they're just not just looking "at kids", it's attention specifically directed at *one*.

Today's world has most of the people who work around kids learning quickly to protect their image and keep any watching/noticing/attention-giving discreet. It's unfortunate that it has to be that way, because under the right circumstances, kids notice quickly that you're noticing them, and will initiate some action or conversation. I've tested this concept a few times myself. But once I fell into the trap of having "tunnel vision" and failed to notice that I was noticed doing the noticing. (Did that make sense?) In other words, I was less than totally discreet.

That earned me some stout advice from some folks who, though they seemed to know no less than the full scoop, were still looking out for my best interests. That's something to inspire confidence even in these socially foreboding times for CLers.
