But the Publishers create the genre boundaries in hopes of boosting sales. All a genre says is "if you like this sort of thing....."
However, this can be limiting when they don't know how to market authors whose work doesn't fit well within the "boundaries." Worse yet, the publishers can pressure authors to not stray too far from the "boundaries."
And, then there's the tendency for a work, if it gets enough literary acclaim, to be poached by the "literary genre" and not considered Science Fiction, Horror, Romance &tc. ( Sure, some of those classics were published outside of the genre. But others were written and published within. )
But back to Griffith's original point. Portraits of "Pedos" ( read SOs ) can vary wildly even within the "literature" category. I quite liked The End Of Alice but found The Lost Memory Of Skin to be strained and affected. Both have received much acclaim.
