The replies at the LA Times article tend to agree with the assessment here that the relationship was probably consensual.

The posters there note that the relationship went on for two years, and the girl had plenty of opportunities to stop it - and that the man contacted the girl, which suggests that their relationship was amicable.

Of course, then they say that he should be killed/castrated/jailed for life anyway.
