But New Jersey? C'mon.
And that really seems to be what this case is about.
Be careful. If New Jersey's US Atty can localize all internet activity to New Jersey then surely Ankara can localize it to Turkey. You haven't committed any crimes; like disparaging Turkey or arguing that the Armenian Genocide happened, have you?
At best, the only count which isn't dependent upon the Internet physically existing in Hoboken, is the charge of laundering money through accounts held in a bank in New Jersey. After all, NYC just recently punished offshore gamblers from passing their ill-gotten gains through NY banks.
And what sort of Intl Kingpin centers his banking on that 4 point foundation of Ukraine, Latvia, Estonia and Hackensack?
However this case is all about catching low-hanging fruitbats.
The site called itself "Illegal.cp" and had to remind its users that it was illegal; Our site is considered to be illegal in all countries"
And then had the caveat; "Even if you ever have problems with police, you can always say that someone had stolen the information from your credit card and used it. It is very difficult to establish that you were the person to pay."
As if that has ever helped those whose credit cards actually were stolen. Is nobody familiar with Landslide?
Then there was the business of linking personal info by paying for things which the authorities claim are being traded illegally on P2P networks for free. Again, don't these idiots read the reports about these eeeeeevil CP traders before they decide to become eeeeeevil CP traders?
If a website promising illegal material, reminding you that its illegal, and then asking for your name address and financial info wasn't a Govt-run sting, it sure was designed to catch the same sort of fish.
Of course the authorities are painting all the imagery in the worst light; "photographs and videos of children being sexually assaulted and abused." But one has to keep in mind that by law any sexual act which would be described as loving and kind, must ( if the participants are shy of the magic-age, ) be described as sexual assault and abuse. Thus making it impossible to determine if any harm happened to a child ( or merely to a statute. )
And I'm beginning to wonder if "International" and "Global" aren't merely euphemisms for "filthy non-American foreigner." After all, if the internet can be localized to Secaucus, then it can also be localized to The Netherlands. So I have to wonder if an American could be described in American media as an International Kingpin if their Global Empire spanned Idaho, Wisconsin, Utah and one user in Leiden?
