However, most of us discuss them in the context of the bias that creeps into news reporting, or in people's reaction to an event in the news. Most fictional media are necessarily at a second remove; first from cultural bias and second from the artists choices in making-up characters and events. Its easier to see the bias purely for what it is when artistic choice is removed from the equation.
I confess that I am a Horror fan. But I prefer supernatural Horror to psychological Horror. And while I've seen some interesting thrillers and giallo films; I tend to steer clear of that subgenre known as "torture-porn" ( Hostel, Saw &tc. ) Mostly because I'm not very interested in sadism. And if I were, I'd rather read about the real thing rather than watch the contents of someone's imaginary view of it.
Also, you will find that some come to GC as a way to escape the incessant cultural indoctrination about being "ticking time bombs" or "monsters." GC is a rather imperfect escape, because discussing stereotypes so as to expose them does happen with some frequency here. But many chose to avoid dwelling on, or skip entirely, posts on what they're all too familiar with.
Of course those new to the community, particularly Nons, aren't aware of the degree to which such indoctrination occurs because such slurs are not as noticeable to folks outside of the community they're being directed at. And again, the discussion of slurs can be a touchy subject for any community when it comes from an outsider ( ferinstance; white guys using the "N" word, ) even a sympathetic one.
