But what the Gnostics added was the knowledge by Jesus himself that he had to be executed, and the keeping of this secret by some chosen ones, including, variously, the Gnostics themselves (vis-à-vis the mainline Christians), and other actors of the NT such as Judas Iscariot, Nicodemus or Pilate himself. And that also makes Peter's denials take a very different tone - not without "political" implications for the budding Church.
